Userland Software at < http://www.scripting.com/frontier5/ > has released Frontier 5.0, the first cross-platform scripting language for both Mac and Windows..

Without Frontier, our newspaper's website at < http://www.rny.com > would have required a new version of yesteryear's composing room. You remember compositors. Their sole job was to translate typewritten copy into something that could be published. Most websites require that translation. Ours doesn't. Scripts automatically check selected folders (directories to PC users) for copy, translating copy into HTML, archiving old stories, and posting new ones on the web. Scripts convert and publish classifieds to the web database untouched by human hands.

I bring it to your attention because it's versatile, practical, economical, has useful suites of programs already written, has a warm community of helpful users, and is available for both Windows and Macintosh users.

Editor's Note: Perl users might remind us that Perl has been available on both platforms much longer than Frontier has. ;-)
